Webinar on Key Recommendations from New Forest Service Report

April 17 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

A new report released last month, Beyond the “Illusion of Preservation”, reveals the imbalance in wood production and consumption in New England and presents a suite of strategies to address this imbalance. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Vermont, Harvard Forest, Conservation Science Partners, University of Massachusetts, and Brandeis University, calls for increased forest protection, reduced wood consumption, and expansion of ecological forestry practices across the region.

The report makes three key recommendations to be achieved by 2060: permanently protect 70% of New England’s landscape with at least 10% of the landscape in passively managed wild lands and 60% in actively managed forests; reduce consumption of lumber and paper by 25% while meeting urgent housing needs and increasing recycling; and expand the practice of ecological forestry and shift production to more durable wood products. This approach would enable New England to focus on conserving more forestland while also meeting forest products needs locally.

Learn more about the report during an online panel discussion on April 17 at 12pm, featuring coauthors Paul Catanzaro, Dr. Caitlin Littlefield, and Dr. Tony D’Amato, hosted by the Northern Forest Center.
