SUMMARY:April 3rd is Agriculture Day at the Statehouse!
DESCRIPTION:Massachusetts Agriculture Day is the one day a year where farmers come together to focus legislative attention on our industry.  On the one hand\, it’s a celebration that recognizes the hard work and many diverse products produced across the Commonwealth; but it’s also an important opportunity for us to have our voices heard and make our issues known to the legislative body.  We strongly encourage each of you to reach out to your local representatives and let them know what matters to you.  What challenges does your business face? What opportunities are on the horizon? How can they be of help?

SUMMARY:Walk at Dwelly Farm Conservation Area Templeton\, MA
DESCRIPTION:Emily Merlino\, Stewardship Manager for NCLT will discuss what has been done to improve the property and what has been successful so far. She will be joined by Tom Ashton\, a trained forester and board member of WCCD\, who will also provide some insight into the forest health and share a forestry perspective to add to the pollinator habitat and invasive removal aspects of the walk. (Walk will take place 10:00-11:30AM.) \nRegister here. \nNorth County Land Trust’s Dwelly Farm Conservation Area has been a years long habitat improvement project to create a native haven for flora and fauna in Templeton\, MA. The goal from the start has been to create improved native habitat for native plants and animals on what once was a dairy farm\, left alone to grow a hearty crop of invasive glossy buckthorn and poor quality pine. For the last 4 years focus has been on removing invasives and planting native wildflowers\, bushes\, and trees to bolster native habitat across the property.

SUMMARY:Soil Amendments for Organic Farms with NOFA Mass
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will discuss a soil-health based approach to using soil amendments on organic farms. \nWe’ll review the OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) list and go over common misconceptions about restricted and listed materials. We’ll also discuss how to use various soil health assessments to determine what amendments your farm needs and how to identify appropriate organic options: \n\nStandard soil test and Saturated Paste Test – chemical mineral content\nBiological Assessment – microbial life\nSoil Health Assessment – physical aspects\n\nYou’ll leave equipped with the knowledge about which soil tests to do and when\, and what the tests will tell you about your soil health and amendment applications. Join us to gain the confidence to craft the right amendments plan for your farm this year. \nAbout the Instructors: \nLaura Davis is a Soil Technical Assistance provider and TOPP Coordinator with NOFA/Mass. She is also an organic certifier with Baystate Organic Certifiers.  Laura has served on the NOFA/Mass Board of Directors since 2011\, as well as the Co-President for the NOFA Interstate Council. \nIn 2014\, Laura joined the NOFA/Mass staff\, assisting farmers with their organic certification questions\, and then joined the Soil Technical Assistance team in 2017 doing soil test analysis. For over 10 years\, Laura ran Long Life Farm in Hopkinton\, MA\, along with her husband Donald Sutherland\, growing certified organic vegetables in a no-till regenerative system. \nAbout the Project: \nNOFA/Mass is proud to be a Core Partner in the Northeast Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP). TOPP is a network assembled by the USDA’s National Organic Program to support transitioning and organic producers with mentorship and resources. Farmer-to-farmer mentorship\, workshops\, webinars\, field days\, technical assistance\, and other educational events will offer opportunities to learn about organic production\, the certification process\, market opportunities\, and more. SUMMARY:Webinar on Key Recommendations from New Forest Service Report
DESCRIPTION:A new report released last month\, Beyond the “Illusion of Preservation”\, reveals the imbalance in wood production and consumption in New England and presents a suite of strategies to address this imbalance. The study\, conducted by researchers at the University of Vermont\, Harvard Forest\, Conservation Science Partners\, University of Massachusetts\, and Brandeis University\, calls for increased forest protection\, reduced wood consumption\, and expansion of ecological forestry practices across the region.  \nThe report makes three key recommendations to be achieved by 2060: permanently protect 70% of New England’s landscape with at least 10% of the landscape in passively managed wild lands and 60% in actively managed forests; reduce consumption of lumber and paper by 25% while meeting urgent housing needs and increasing recycling; and expand the practice of ecological forestry and shift production to more durable wood products. This approach would enable New England to focus on conserving more forestland while also meeting forest products needs locally. \nLearn more about the report during an online panel discussion on April 17 at 12pm\, featuring coauthors Paul Catanzaro\, Dr. Caitlin Littlefield\, and Dr. Tony D’Amato\, hosted by the Northern Forest Center. \nRead the report here \nRegister for the webinar here
