SUMMARY:MACC Free Lunch and Learn-- Harmful Algal Blooms: Monitoring and Management
DESCRIPTION:Algae and cyanobacteria naturally occur in freshwater systems and provide vital ecosystem functions. However\, excessive nutrient loading can lead to overgrowth (blooms) of these species\, causing water discoloration\, alteration of water taste or smell\, and oxygen depletion. Harmful algal blooms (HABs)\, which can have direct impacts on human and animal health\, result from overgrowth of toxin-producing cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria vary widely in appearance\, and not all cyanobacterial blooms produce toxins. Therefore\, monitoring and testing is necessary to establish if a HAB is present in each water body. A wide range of management approaches can be employed to prevent and mitigate HABs and nuisance algal blooms. Watershed-based approaches\, including installation of stormwater BMPs\, septic system upgrades\, and behavioral changes\, seek to reduce external nutrient inputs into the waterbody and reduce HABs over the longer term. However\, in-lake management strategies (e.g.\, use of algicides\, clay and surfactant flocculation\, hypolimnetic oxygenation and aeration\, application of phosphorus-binding compounds\, and even some less proven approaches) are often required immediately when there is a need to prevent and address HABs to protect human health. \nImportance for Commissions: Almost all management strategies will require approval through a Conservation Commission\, while some may also require approval from MassDEP in the form of a License to Apply Chemicals\, NHESP review\, or a Chapter 91 license. Join us this Thursday for this important discussion! \nPresenters’ Bios: \nCarl Nielsen\, CLM\nCarl is a Certified Lake Manager (CLM) and Sr. Program Manager with TRC Environmental with a BS degree in Biology from Colgate University and an MS degree in Fisheries & Wildlife from the University of Missouri. Carl has been managing lakes and ponds in southern New England for nearly 30 years and is recognized as a scientific expert and limnologist that routinely provides an unbiased opinion on the best practices for lake and pond management to address a wide range of in-lake and watershed issues including HABs\, nuisance aquatic weeds\, poor water quality\, and other impacts from eutrophication. Carl has overseen over 200 lake\, pond and reservoir studies for a range of clients including municipalities\, state agencies\, the USACE\, the USEPA\, and privately owned systems.  Carl can be reached at cnielsen@trccompanies.com \nAnna Chase\nAnna is a Project Manager and water resources scientist with more than eight years of experience in the monitoring and management of freshwater lakes and ponds. SUMMARY:Webinar: Impacts of Year-Round Increasing Temperatures on New England Farms
DESCRIPTION:Join CISA and Sara Kelemen from the USDA Northeast Climate Hub for the 2024 “Adapt Your Farm to Climate Change” workshop and webinar series kick-off event. Sara will share climate and temperature data from New England and discuss some examples of how temperature change will impact agricultural operations. Sara has been working on diversified farms for eight years\, and manages climate adaptation and mitigation planning programs for many types of farmers with the Climate Hub and other partners. \nEach year\, CISA’s Climate Program organizes the “Adapt Your Farm to Climate Change” workshop and webinar series with a focus on practical measures and resources that can help farms respond to extreme weather events that are the norm these days. This year’s series focuses on the impacts of increasing and sustained high temperatures around the year on specific parts of our food system\, including soils\, weeds and pests\, farmworker health and safety\, heat tolerant crops\, urban farms and others.  \nRegister here! \nFor more information\, email climate@buylocalfood.org or call (413) 270-1988.

SUMMARY:37th Annual Massachusetts Envirothon - SAVE THE DATE!
DESCRIPTION:Preparations are underway for the 37th annual Massachusetts Envirothon! We hope you will be able to join us at the Wachusett Reservoir on Thursday May 23 to help make the magic happen! Right now\, teams are hard at work mastering the curriculum and envisioning a sustainable energy future for their communities\, and the steering committee is busy preparing tests and resources for the competition! Volunteers on the day of the event provide crucial support everywhere from the food tent to the soil pit\, from behind cameras to scoring tests\, from leading team members and coaches to judging presentations. RSVP here to volunteer on May 23! \nEnvirothon Steering Committee \nMA Envirothon needs you!! So much goes on throughout the year to get ready for the May event. Please consider joining the committee to help guide the program as we look to expand our outreach across the state. We have some specific roles that need to be filled (alumni outreach\, media specialist\, food tent leader) and we always welcome folks who can help us with big picture thinking! If you’re interested\, please reach out to Envirothon Chair\, Justin Gonsor (Justin.Gonsor@mass.gov) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Changing Hydrology in New England Agriculture and Agroforestry
DESCRIPTION:Heavy precipitation events in the Northeast and Midwest regions of the United States have increased in frequency and intensity over the past century. These hydrologic deviations are projected to continue with climate change and will substantially alter the landscapes we live in and value. \n Extreme precipitation effects on agriculture could have downstream effects on food supply for many people. Anthony Buda of USDA Agricultural Research Service will cover the impacts of extreme precipitation and flooding in agricultural settings and cover current research on this topic. Katherine Favor and Samuel Feibel of the National Agroforestry Center will then provide an applied perspective on how agroforestry can be used to help farms adapt to increased flooding risk and extreme precipitation. \nRegister here!
