SUMMARY:Spring Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Online Ordering Deadline: April 21 \nWe will be selling wildflowers\, grasses\, seeds\, and more! We will also be selling fruits and other edible plants! Examples include blueberries\, elderberries\, and ostrich fern! All plants will come as plugs and tubelings. There will be numerous options available to you! Once again\, we will be selling Black Gold Composted Cow Manure! Root bags and bat houses will also be available to purchase. \nAll of our native plant varieties are straight species\, meaning that no cultivars will be sold. It has been found that cultivars often do not have the same benefits to wildlife that straight species do. Our focus on native species will help our native pollinators\, increase biodiversity\, and conserve our native plants and animals\, among other benefits. \nWe will not be selling any ornamental non-native bulbs. We hope those of you who are traditional gardeners will look at our native plants\, as they can be just as gorgeous and hold significant value to our native pollinators and other wildlife. Some natives that we are providing are also great alternatives to invasive plants such as Winged Euonymus and non-native turf grasses. \nThere will be a first-come\, first-serve cash sale on leftover cold-germination seeds\, plants\, and garden supplies at the pickup site. \nOrder Pickup\nMay 2\, 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM\nMay 3\, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM\nFarrington Nature Linc.\n291 Cambridge Turnpike\nLincoln\, MA 01773 \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Winter Seed Sowing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:You can have beautiful flowers while helping our most at risk pollinators by choosing plants from Dr. Robert Gegear’s researched plant list. An easy and affordable way to get these plants for your yard is to grow them from seed by the Winter Sow method. Our native plants have co-evolved with New England weather patterns with most native plant seeds requiring a period of alternating freezing and thawing to break dormancy and germinate. \nWe will show you how to plant in milk jugs so that you will have wonderful native plants next summer. We will provide seeds. All the seeds being offered for the Winter Sow Program are on Dr. Gegear’s Plant List and the resulting plants will help preserve our biodiversity and our local ecosystem. Using this simple method of planting in milk jugs that are then placed outside over the winter\, you will be amazed with the bounty of native plants. Even the most inexperienced gardener can grow for their gardens with extras to share with friends. No gardening experience necessary. \nThis program will be hands on; you will learn how to turn milk jugs into planters\, you will take them home\, place them outside and wait for spring. You will have wonderful native plants next summer. \nWe will provide the soil and seeds. You need to provide your own Gallon size milk/water jugs; we are planning to provide seeds and soil for 2 jugs for each attendee. You can bring extra milk jugs to make more planters as supplies last. We estimate that attendees can make 2 to 4 jugs each. \nSome supplies can be shared and when you register\, you will be asked what you can bring to share (please put your name on all materials you are planning to share). These may include:\n– Small towels for wiping up spills\n– Cordless Power Drill with ¼ in size bit.\n– Scissors\, box cutter knives\, Exacto knives\n– Clean\, and empty large yogurt containers to make labels\n– You may want to bring an apron \nWe need volunteers to help with cleanup at the end. Please indicate if you can stay a little longer to help us when you register for the workshop. \nPresenter Bios:\nIn 2020\, Giancarla Kalpas learned about Dr. Robert Gegear’s research and the optimistic message that by planting the plants he recommends we can restore pollination systems and save species from extinction. In 2021 she planted the first garden at Sunny Meadow Farm in Chelmsford. The following year the two bumblebees at risk in our region were seen at the garden. Encouraged by this success she has enlarged the garden several times and continues to promote the plants needed by pollinators at risk through garden tours and lectures. \nChair of the Southborough Open Space Preservation Commission (OSPC) \, Freddie Gillespie has been working on native plant-native pollinator habitat for over 20 years. She oversees habitat management on over 100 acres on Breakneck Hill Conservation Land and has been working with Dr. Robert Gegear since 2015 when he adopted Breakneck Hill as his first research site in the state. Freddie has facilitated numerous installations of Pollination Preservation Gardens and native pollinator meadows in Southborough and mentored volunteers in other towns as they established gardens. Under her leadership\, the OSPC has a robust Native Plant-Native Pollinator Initiative and is in her 6th year running Winter Sow Programs. \nThis is a hands-on\, in-person workshop. \nCost: Free\, Registration Required\, suggested donation of $5 to $10 \nRegister here \n\n\n	Related
