SUMMARY:Restoring Soil with Compost: Lessons from the LA Wildfires & More
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance\, this webinar will introduce the post-fire soil contaminants of concern\, the basics of microscopy to assess soil health\, how to interpret soil test results\, and the role of compost in bioremediation. \n  \nLearn more about this webinar on our website.\nHas your community been affected by wildfires or some other source of pollution? Are you concerned about contaminants in your compost or soil? Are you interested in learning how to monitor your compost or soil yourself? \nIn this webinar\, Lynn Fang\, Founder of SoilWise and Soil & Compost Specialist with LA Compost\, will introduce the contaminants of concern in soil and compost after an urban wildfire\, the role of microscopy in assessing soil health\, and how compost can support soil bioremediation. Lynn will share about soil test results and bioremediation projects in Altadena done through SoilWise\, and will also touch on findings from the recently published Post-Fire Contamination Toolkit\, which analyzed soil and compost samples at several LA Compost sites affected by the Eaton Fire in Altadena. She will also share about principles of bioremediation using compost and other ecological tools. \nIf you’re a compost or soil steward\, involved in an existing composting initiative\, or interested in supporting composting in your community – whether you are a composter\, regulator\, policymaker\, local business\, urban or rural farmer\, environmentalist\, or public interest advocate – this webinar is for you. \n  \nPresenter: Lynn Fang\, MS – Founder\, SoilWise / Soil & Compost Specialist\, LA Compost (CA)\nLynn has over 10 years of experience in ecological landscape design\, soil science\, community composting\, and regenerative farming. She centers on soil health as the foundation of thriving and abundant gardens teaches a Microbial Assessment Certificate course. Her teaching and community work include partnerships with LA Compost\, the 131° School of Composting\, Integrative Development Initiative\, CalRecycle Community Composting for Green Spaces\, Cal Poly Pomona\, and Pitzer College. \nLynn is certified as a California Native Plant Landscaper\, Permaculture Designer\, and Compost Facility Operator. \n  \nThis live Zoom webinar will take place on August 14\, 2025 from 12 – 1:30 p.m. ET. A recording will be made available to registrants.\nRegistration is $20. Free registration is available for government\, farmers\, K-12 schools\, and Community Composter Coalition members. Government should use the discount code “GOV”\, Farmers should use “FARMER”\, K-12 educators and schools should use “EDU”\, and CCC members should use “CCC” at checkout for free registration. \nIf you’re a community composter and would like to apply to be a part of the coalition\, visit https://ilsr.org/composting/community-composter-coalition to learn more. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Developing Climate Resilient Water Management Plans for Diverse Cropping Systems
DESCRIPTION:A free\, virtual webinar. \nBecause of climate change\, it can be more difficult than ever to plan for meeting the water needs of your crops. Answering questions around the nuances of crop water needs\, how to identify and utilize appropriate water sources\, and how to know if your water supply will be sustainable into the future are all becoming more challenging to answer. In this forum\, Dr. Rahcel Schattman will discuss how to acquire the information needed to develop climate-resilient farm water plans and cover emerging opportunities for improving water management strategies in diversified cropping systems. Rachel’s presentation will be followed by a facilitated farmer-to-farmer discussion. Come to listen\, share your experiences\, ask questions\, troubleshoot\, and be inspired about new systems that may make your own farm more climate-resilient \nDr. Rachel Schattman is an Assistant Professor of Sustainable Agriculture at the University of Maine School of Food and Agriculture\, where she focuses on supporting farmers to be more resilient in the face of climate change while protecting natural resources. \nThe Climate Forums are brought to you by NOFA-VT and MOFGA. This event is one in a three-part series discussing Managing Agricultural Systems in a Changing Climate. At the registration link\, you can choose to attend whichever sessions you wish. Our first session is focused on nutrient management for crop producers\, our second session focuses on grassland fertility management\, and our third session discusses farm water planning for diverse production types. \nRegister here. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Worcester Native Plant Initiative Webinar Restoring Nature's Relationships at Home with Doug Tallamy
DESCRIPTION:Join Doug remotely on Monday\, March 18th 6:30-8:30pm from Clark University’s campus \nHomegrown National Park; Building Networks for Life! \nOur parks\, preserves\, and remaining wildlands – no matter how grand in scale – are too small and separated from one another to sustain the native trees\, plants\, insects\, and animals on which our ecosystems depend. We can fix this problem by practicing conservation outside of wildlands\, where we live\, work\, shop\, and farm. Thus\, the concept for Homegrown National Park: a national challenge to create diverse ecosystems in our yards\, communities\, and surrounding lands by reducing lawn\, planting natives\, and removing invasives. The initial goal of HNP is to create a national movement to restore 20 million acres with natives\, an area representing ½ of what is now in lawn. We are at a critical point where we are losing so many native plant and animal species that our natural life support is in jeopardy. However\, if many people make small changes\, we can restore healthy ecological networks and weather the changes ahead. We can do this In Worcester! Come and be inspired by Doug and your community members working on the ground in your hometown. \nBrought to you by The Worcester Native Plant Initiative in collaboration with The Worcester Garden Club\, Broad Meadow Brook\, and Clark University. \nRegister for the webinar here. \n\n\n	Related
