SUMMARY:No-till Vegetable Production in Living Mulch at Waltham Fields Community Farm
DESCRIPTION:Come take a tour of Waltham Fields Community Farm on August 14th\, from 4-7pm. \nWe’ll be learning about the farm operation\, and digging deep into their recent tillage reduction systems. \nWaltham Fields Community Farm uses a perennial clover living mulch to suppress weeds\, reduce plastic use\, and increase soil health. After learning about how they implemented this living clover mulch experiment\, NOFA/Mass’s Ruben Parilla will demonstrate the use of a tool to measure microbial biomass and fungal:bacterial ratio as a measure of how no-till practices affect overall soil health. \n  \nSchedule/Agenda: \n4:00pm – Farm Tour with Waltham Fields Community Farms \n5:00pm – Reduced tillage techniques and clover living mulch experiments discussion with Momentum Ag \n6:00pm – Microbiometer demonstration of soil microbiology in no-till\, living mulch fields vs. tilled tomatoes under plastic mulch with NOFA/Mass \n  \nAbout Waltham Fields Community Farm \nWaltham Fields Community Farm cultivates sustainable and equitable relationships between people\, their food supply\, and the land from which it grows. We envision communities with equitable access to the beauty\, sanctuary\, and food of local\, sustainable farms. \nWFCF’s community is defined by our location in an urban environment\, members/donors who support us\, our CSA shareholders\, people who participate in our educational programs and offer their time and talents\, and the extended network of groups who collaborate with us to support common goals. Inspired by our core mission\, Waltham Fields Community Farm (WFCF) Programs include education\, food access & hunger relief\, volunteer service learning\, and sustainable agriculture.  From WFCF’s inception\, members and volunteers have formed the core of our community. We believe that farming is a valuable and honorable occupation. We subscribe to organic farming methods that respect natural systems and enhance the health of our environment and community. We celebrate the beauty of fertile fields and the taste of heirloom crops. \n  \nAccessibility: \nThis event will involve walking around on farmland terrain – it is generally flat\, but rugged. There are two portapotties on site; one is wheelchair accessible. \n  \nMore Information: \nWe want to make sure your accessibility needs are met during the event. Please share with us your needs regarding (but not limited to): physical accessibility\, allergies\, noise\, scent\, gender\, intellectual accessibility\, and any instructions or tips to help you fully participate. \nIf you’re driving\, park to the right of or behind the brick building at 240 Beaver St\, wherever there is space.
